Grand Masti Movie Review

Masti which released almost a decade back earned kudos for being a rather smart adult themed comedy with doses of suspense imbibed in the script. It became a commercial hit. The producers have now decided to start up a Masti franchise with the sequel Grand Masti releasing in theatres today. The uncensored trailer has created quite a buzz and the excitement around the film is surprisingly high. So what is the film all about? Does it do a better job than Masti? Let’s find out.

Story: Grand Masti is about three sexually starved married men – Meet (Vivek Oberoi), Prem (Aftab Shivdasani) and Amar (Riteish Deshmukh). They are frustrated with their lives and decide to attend a college reunion party six years after passing out from college. They meet three seductive women Rose (Maryam Zakaria), Mary (Bruna Abdullah) and Marlow (Kainaat Arora). The names of these three women when said together makes up a rather crude joke (also didn’t they use the same joke in Kya Super Kool Hain Hum?). Seriously speaking, only fools will go to watch a film like Grand Masti expecting any elaborate story. Grand Masti is all about ‘funny’ gags and jokes set up by bizarre incidents which happen in and due to the reunion party.

Grand Masti Movie Review

Screenplay and Direction: The writers Milap Zaveri and Tushar Hiranandani dig in to the vault of decade old stale and vulgar SMS jokes and somehow inculcate them into the scenes. It feels as if most of the gags are setup just so the characters can say those godawful lame jokes. Indra Kumar who made hit films like Dil and Raja is now being driven by drivel in the form of Double Dhamaal, Grand Masti and so on. Grand Masti is filled with double meaning innuendos and most of the jokes can be seen as offensive especially in a country like India where rapes, molestations are getting more rampant by the day. Grand Masti essentially shows that every woman in India is gettable.
Miscellaneous and Music: The other aspects of Grand Masti are not exemplary, of course. They are not aiming for cinematic excellence in the cinematography, production design, editing departments. The camerawork, editing and production design are all appropriate. The most eye-catching work has been seen (or not seen) in the clothes department because most of the women in the film are scantily clothed. The music of Grand Masti is not one of its strong points as the songs sound repetitive and the song sequences are also nothing short of uninspiring.
Acting: All the three lead actors of Grand Masti are at their cringiest best delivering hammier performances with every proceeding scene. The standout performance is by Riteish Deshmukh who has now become sort of a veteran in the field of adult comedy. Vivek Oberoi delivers his most over-the-top performance ever and Aftab Shivdasani keeps it subtle, well in comparison to the others. The ladies in the film mostly have nothing to do other than bare their skin and are fairly good at it – Kainaat Arora, Maryam Zakaria and Bruna Abdullah. Sonalee Kulkarni, Karishma Tanna and Manjari Fadnis do decently in their own roles.
Conclusion and Box Office: Grand Masti is loathsome to say the least. It is raunchy filmmaking at its worst with almost all of the jokes coming across as manufactured. It will be enjoyed by only a select few in the country. But the opening will be of grand proportions thanks to the pent up demand for a film of its genre.
